With 365 days, 12 months, and 52 weeks on the calendar, it may be a little daunting to find out the perfect time to visit the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Zambia, but not to worry, here at Sikiliza, our mission is to design luxury travel to suit your specific needs. This is why we have compiled a list of the top three best times to visit one of the world’s seven spectacular natural wonders.
April to June
If you’ve always wanted the great African rainforest adventure, then this time would be perfect for you Imagine waking up to a beautiful mist spray and light rain from the gushing falls when the water in the Zambezi river is at its most abundant. The roaring sound of water spilling uninterrupted in the great river gorge below will open your senses – great for meditation in the morning to really get in touch with nature. However there is a downside you may not be able to get so close to the falls themselves due to the immense amount of water this time. As this is just after the rainy season, water levels will be extremely high, thus meaning less activities due to the safety hazard the falls pose on individuals during white water rafting and other similar activities. This period is great for nature lovers, who want to experience the falls at their mightiest, when the river has swelled and can no longer contain the water that wants to break free. We recommend helicopter flights above the falls for a surreal experience and see the “Mosi oa Tunya” – The Smoke that Thunders in its magnificence, from above!
July to August
The Victoria Falls are twice the size of Niagara Falls in Canada and they are thought to have been created around 70 000 years ago due to the soft rock in the area that was eroded by the fast paced gushing Zambezi River at that time. To have a look at the gorge itself and the sheer size of this ginormous crack in the earth’s surface, we suggest that the best time to visit the Falls would be during where there will be much less water and less spray from the falls thus one will be able to see the geomorphology of the area. Although it is wintertime, you can expect temperatures of 20 to 30 degrees Celsius and warm sunny day. Livingstone Island will also be open and rafting as well! This is a great time for keen archaeologists and geologists who would love to get a look at the great splendour of the world to see the falls with less water and get a wider, clearer view of the surrounding area.
September to November
Some may think it unwise to visit the Victoria Falls during the dry season, however this could be to your advantage as there will be more opportunities for activity such as bungi jumping, cruise at the bottom of the falls, …! This time is perfect as the smaller amounts of water in the falls will mean one will get to experience the beauty of the Victoria Falls – which are still beautiful during this time, as well as adrenaline inducing activities such as swimming in the notorious devil’s pool in the Zambezi river that have a view of the gaping gorge below! Game viewing is also fantastic at this time around the Chobe River and other game reserves. Be sure to experience white water rafting as well as the water would have dropped to a safe level. This time is best for dare devils who are ready to test their limits and create a fabulous adventure!
As you see, the Victoria Falls are always beautiful, however – you can choose which aspect of the falls you would like to experience and make memories of a lifetime in the “Smoke That Thunders”!
